Johnson Lake & Kinney Lake
Every great adventure starts long before the first photograph is taken. For us, it began on a Thursday evening with a packed vehicle, mountain bikes, paddleboards, and the excitement of finally escaping the city. Our destination was the Canadian Rockies, but we weren't in a hurry. The road itself was part of the adventure.
The Journey North
After work we headed west, watching the landscape slowly transform from rolling hills into towering mountain ranges. Before reaching our overnight stop, we made time to visit Helmcken Falls along with a couple of nearby waterfalls in Wells Gray Provincial Park. Hearing the roar of the waterfalls in the cool evening air felt like the official beginning of our trip.
By the time we rolled into Valemount later that night, everyone was tired—but excited for what tomorrow had in store.

Crystal Waters of Johnson Lake
The next morning greeted us with sunshine and one of the most beautiful lakes we've ever seen. Johnson Lake almost didn't look real. The water shimmered in brilliant shades of turquoise, surrounded by dense forests that reflected perfectly across its calm surface.
My fiancée and I wasted no time unloading the paddleboards. Within minutes we were gliding across unbelievably clear water while soaking in every direction we looked. It was peaceful, quiet, and one of those rare moments where time seems to slow down.
Trading Paddleboards for Pedals
After another restful night in Valemount, it was time to switch gears—literally. The paddleboards stayed behind as the mountain bikes came out. Our destination was Kinney Lake, one of the first major highlights along the famous Berg Lake Trail beneath Mount Robson.
The ride wasn't overly technical, but it was long enough to earn every view. Each climb rewarded us with rushing rivers, towering evergreens, and glimpses of glaciers hidden among the mountains.
Standing beside the glacier-fed lake with Mount Robson towering above us was one of those moments that photographs can only partially capture. We spent a while simply taking it all in before grabbing a few victory photos and beginning the ride back.
Looking Back
It's funny how quickly road trips begin to blur together, but this day has always stood out. Between the waterfalls, paddleboarding on Johnson Lake, sharing lunch with Dad, and biking to Kinney Lake, it perfectly captured what we wanted this trip to be about.
Not rushing from attraction to attraction, but slowing down enough to enjoy every stop along the way.
By the end of the day we had already crossed off several bucket-list locations, yet it somehow felt like the adventure was only just beginning.
