There is a specific kind of burning in your calves that you only get from hiking King's Creek Ridge. Known for being unabashedly steep right out of the gate, this trail doesn't offer switchbacks or a gentle warm-up. It simply points you straight up the mountain and demands that you start climbing.
Our day started with high spirits in the parking lot. The weather was looking a bit moody—a classic Kananaskis mix of rolling clouds and peeking sun—but the crew was ready to tackle the incline. We snapped a quick group selfie while our legs still felt fresh, blissfully unaware of the elevation gain awaiting us.
The calm before the steep ascent.
The first stretch of the hike is a relentless grind through the dense pine forest. You gain elevation so quickly that it feels more like climbing a staircase than hiking a trail. But just when you think your lungs are going to give out, the trees begin to thin, the air gets cooler, and the true magic of this hike reveals itself.
Left: Nico on the ascent. Right: Breaking the treeline for the first real views.
Walking the spine of the ridge is where the payoff really happens. To the left and right, the valleys drop away dramatically, leaving you completely exposed to the elements and the incredible 360-degree views of the Opal Range. We took our time up here, carefully navigating the rocky spine, taking in the dramatic, cloudy backdrop, and capturing some amazing photos along the edge.
Enjoying the reward: walking the spine of King's Creek Ridge.
Of course, what goes up must eventually come down. If the way up burned our lungs, the descent absolutely destroyed our knees. The steep, loose dirt makes for a slippery journey back to the cars, requiring total focus so you don't end up sliding down the mountain on your backside.
The Ultimate Post-Hike Reward
After surviving the steep descent and finally making it back to the vehicles, there was only one thing on everyone's mind: Food. We packed up and drove straight to a local ramen shop. Sitting outside on the patio with a massive bowl of steaming tonkotsu ramen, cold drinks, and an exhausted but happy crew was the absolute perfect end to a heavy leg day.
