July 18 2020 — A Spontaneous Banff Day Trip

A simple day with university friends turned into one of the memories I still smile about years later.

Back in the summer of 2020, all four of us were living in Calgary. University life was different that year, but whenever we had a free day we looked for an excuse to escape the city.

So I loaded up my car, picked up Tommy, Frank, and my best friend Christian, and before long we were driving west toward Banff. There wasn't a strict itinerary, just a rough idea to see a few waterfalls, climb Tunnel Mountain, and enjoy whatever the day brought us.

Silverton Falls

Our first stop was Silverton Falls. It wasn't one of Banff's famous postcard locations, but that made it even better. The trail was quiet, the air smelled like pine, and the sound of rushing water echoed through the trees.

It was the perfect way to start the day. No rush, no schedule—just friends enjoying being outside.

Tunnel Mountain

Next came Tunnel Mountain. It isn't the tallest hike in Banff, but the steady climb gives you more and more incredible views with every switchback. We joked, talked about university, and wondered where life would take us after graduation.

Standing at the summit, it felt like we could see forever. The Bow River snaked through the valley while forests stretched toward mountains that seemed to go on forever. It was one of those views that photographs never quite do justice.

Bow Falls

After hiking, we made our way to Bow Falls. The waterfall isn't especially tall, but the sheer volume of water crashing over the rocks is incredible. Sitting beside it, feeling the cool mist and listening to the roar of the river, was the perfect way to unwind after the hike.

Looking at this photo now reminds me how little we cared about getting the perfect picture. We were simply happy to be together, enjoying a beautiful summer day.

Ending the Day

Instead of calling it a day after Banff, we drove back to Calgary and finished the evening at Christian's house with a bonfire. As the sun disappeared, the conversations kept going. We laughed about the hike, joked about our terrible photos, and planned future adventures that, at the time, felt certain to happen.

Years have passed since that day. We've all gone our separate ways with careers, responsibilities, and new chapters in life. But every time I come across these photos, I'm reminded that the best trips don't have to be expensive or ambitious. Sometimes all you need are good friends, a car pointed toward the mountains, and a full day with nowhere else to be.
